PhD position in experimental physics

A PhD position within experimental physics is available at the Department of Physics. The appointment has a duration of 3 years. The topic of the PhD is “Advanced characterisation of intermediate band materials for photovoltaic applications” and will involve photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies of doped, wide bandgap oxides, in close collaboration with the photovoltaic material growth groups at NTNU.

Job description

The candidate’s project will be devoted to PES and TEM. The PES studies will be focused on the non-standard and advanced experimental methods which we have developed specifically for studying intermediate band materials. In particular resonant absorption and emission studies using synchrotron facilities in Denmark, Sweden and elsewhere. The TEM characterization will involve a broad range of TEM techniques, from conventional TEM and diffraction to advanced high resolution scanning TEM and spectroscopy, like electron energy loss and X-ray spectroscopy. The NORTEM infrastructure (www.nortem.com) in Trondheim will be used.

The position is organized in the Department of Physics. Currently, there are 26 professors, 14 associate professors, 4 adjunct professors, 71 PhD research fellows and 16 postdoctoral positions appointed at the Department of Physics. Qualifications

The applicant must have an MSc (or equivalent) in in physics, or a closely related subject. Due to the broad range of advanced experimental techniques which the candidate will be required to use, applicants with prior experience of photoemission techniques (synchrotron based PES in particular) and/or TEM will be strongly preferred. Knowledge and practical experience with the relevant data handling and analysis, as well as experience with the relevant sample preparation is also desirable. The successful candidate should be creative, with a strong ability to work problem oriented. He/she should also enjoy interdisciplinary research and take keen interest in learning and working in teams.

The regulations for PhD programmes at NTNU state that a Master degree or equivalent with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best) for the two last years of the MSc is required and C or higher of the BSc. The position requires spoken and written fluency in the English language. Applicants from non-English-speaking countries outside Europe must document English skills by an approved test. Approved tests are TOEFL, IELTS and Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English(CAE) or Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE).

Terms of employment

The appointment will be made according to the general regulations regarding university employees. PhD research positions are remunerated in salary code 1017, normally at start wage level 50 on the Norwegian Government pay scale, gross NOK 430 200 per year before tax. There is a 2% deduction for superannuation contribution.

The appointment of the PhD fellows will be made according to Norwegian guidelines for universities and university colleges and to the general regulations regarding university employees. Applicants must agree to participate in organized doctoral study programs within the period of the appointment and have to be qualified for the PhD-study.
