Product life cycle management is an optimization problem where estimation and understanding of demand and its causal factors are critical components in allowing businesses to take actions that optimize value from the products at hand. There are many factors influencing demand, from fairly controllable variables such as price and marketing efforts, to external and less controllable variables such as trends and weather. In this talk we will take a data scientist’s perspective on product life cycle management and discuss challenges, pitfalls and potential approaches.
Understanding the relation between price and demand (price elasticity) is particularly interesting, and an area where causality quickly becomes a major topic. Modelling this with traditional ML methods requires caution. A way of better estimating price elasticity is through experimentation, e.g. with A/B testing or multi-armed bandit models. This talk will as such give an introduction to bandit algorithms, and how they can be used to understand price elasticity.
