PhD position in applied mathematics - porous media (Work Package 1)

The Department of Mathematics has a vacancy for a research fellow (PhD position) in applied mathematics – porous media for a period of 3 years, starting on 1 August 2017

The PhD candidate will be a member of the project “EOR upscaling – from lab to field”, which is a project at Uni Research CIPR financed by the PETROMAKS 2 program at the Research Council of Norway. The research project is a collaboration between Uni Research CIPR, Univ. of Bergen, and Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, UK. In addition, there is research collaboration with professors from Texas A&M, TX, USA and Univ. of Texas at Austin, TX, USA on specific topics in the project. Industry partners are DEA Norge AS, Statoil ASA, VNG Norge AS, and Wintershall Norge AS. The terms and conditions for the employment will be governed by the University of Bergen.

About the project/work tasks: The PhD candidate will participate in the project’s Work Package 1: Pore scale EOR mechanisms, where the goal is to understand mechanisms that influence interactions between rock, water, oil and EOR chemicals at the pore scale level, and validate and develop network models for flow of these fluids, by extending an existing water – oil network model.

Qualifications and personal qualities:

  • The applicant must hold a master's degree or the equivalent in mathematics or related area, or must have submitted his/her master's thesis for assessment prior to the application deadline. It is a condition of employment that the master's degree has been awarded.

  • Solid background in mathematical modelling and numerical simulation of flow and transport in porous media, including coding experience, preferably in C++. Familiarity with network models and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) models will be a significant advantage.

  • Work independently and in a structured manner, and have the ability to cooperate with others.

  • Proficiency in both written and oral English.

About the PhD position: The fellowship position is for a fixed term of 3 years. The employment period may be reduced if you have previously been employed in a recruitment position.

About the research training: As a PhD Candidate, you must participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree within a period of 3 years. A final plan for the implementation of the research training must be approved by the faculty within three months after you have commenced in the position. It is a condition that you satisfy the enrolment requirements for the PhD programme at the University of Bergen.
